Addressing Unconscious Bias at Work

Recognising unconscious bias is essential in fostering an inclusive environment, whether in the workplace, social settings, or personal life. 

Unconscious biases are social stereotypes about demographics that people form outside their awareness. Here’s how to recognize and address them:


1. Understand What Unconscious Bias Is 🤔


Educate yourself about different types of unconscious biases, such as gender bias, age bias, racial bias, and confirmation bias.

Understanding these concepts is the first step in recognising them in yourself.


2. Reflect on Your Own Beliefs and Attitudes 💭


Take time to introspect about your beliefs and attitudes towards people from different groups.

Ask yourself if there are stereotypes that influence your thinking and behaviour unconsciously.


3. Seek Feedback from Others ✍️


Sometimes, noticing our biases is difficult. Ask trusted colleagues, friends, or family members for honest feedback about your behaviour and decisions.

They might see patterns that you overlook.

Are you leaning towards a decision based on stereotypes or facts?


6. Use the ‘Flip the Script’ Technique 🗒️


If you react to a person or a situation, ask yourself how you would feel if the person’s gender, race, age, or other characteristics differed.

This can reveal underlying biases.


7. Take Implicit Association Tests (IAT) 📝


These online tests can help uncover unconscious biases by measuring the strength of associations between concepts and evaluations.

Read books, watch documentaries, and attend workshops or seminars on diversity and inclusion.
