Development Engineer

Seven Life Science are currently seeking a Development Engineer to work in Southampton.

Job Description:

Design and development of fluid handling systems and other aspects of a novel medical diagnostic product that ensures patients can receive the right antibiotic much sooner than currently. Development and implementation of test rigs and optimisation of the overall system to minimise the cycle time and maximise the throughput. Flexible working hours. Role would suit a Design Engineer / Mechanical Design Engineer / Product Development Engineer with previous experience of designing mechanical or electro-mechanical systems, equipment, machinery or similar. 

This Job will Involve:

  • Development of subsystems for a piece of laboratory equipment, especially the fluid handling aspects and the disposable cartridge.
  • Designing fluid handling systems, sourcing parts, assembling rigs and subsystems, carrying out tests to demonstrate performance.
  • Some 3D CAD work, but this is not a pure CAD role – experience developing and building rigs is critical.
  • Design for manufacture and assembly.
  • Development of test plans and procedures, conducting and accurately documenting the tests.
  • Work closely with internal and external stakeholders e.g. production, service, sales teams and suppliers. 

Skills and Experience:

  • A Design Engineer / Mechanical Design Engineer / Product Development Engineer with at least 2 years of previous experience of designing mechanical or electromechanical systems, equipment, machinery or similar.
  • Experience of producing 3D CAD designs, detailed engineering drawings. The company uses Solidworks/Inventor but experience of using another CAD package should not be an issue,
  • Any exposure to the design of fluid handling systems (syringe pumps, valves, pipette tips etc.), special purpose machinery or similar equipment would be beneficial but a solid mechanical engineering background is what we are looking for.
  • You are likely to hold a good (first or 2:1) degree in a mechanical engineering or similar discipline.
  • You will need to be able to work under minimal supervision with a flexible attitude and be capable of solving problems and working to an agreed timescale to deliver working test rigs and pieces of equipment.

  • The job will be based within our new spinout, initially on the Southampton University campus. You will be part of a small, well-funded team, bringing this revolutionary new diagnostics technology to market, scheduled for late 2024.
  • You may spend some time within the Electromechanical Medical Devices Group within the Department of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton, Highfield Campus, which will include opportunities to be trained in microbiology techniques at UKHSA, Parton Down.
  • Design, development, and manufacture of laboratory equipment to be deployed in hospital laboratories,

  • Salary guideline: £30K – £40K dependent upon experience, 27 days holiday (increasing 1 day each year), flexible working hours.
