Finance Officer – Corporate Finance

Seven Resourcing are looking for a Finance Officer to work in Shepton, Somerset within the Corporate Finance team for Somerset Council. This is a full time position and we are paying £39.55 per hour for this role.

The role:

Assisting with the monitoring of the revenue budget in accordance with relevant guidance and within tight deadlines. Provide financial and non-financial information required in accordance with all relevant guidance and deadlines. Ensuring all income and expenditure is correctly accounted for within the finance system Have significant experience of working in a finance environment, preferably in a Local Government setting.

Strong Microsoft Excel skills are essential, as is the ability to plan and prioritise own workload with minimal supervision, to meet tight deadlines.

Excellent communication skills and be confident conversing with a range of stakeholders with the ability to build relationships with staff at all levels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Compiling detailed estimates for clients based on service knowledge and corporate guidance, and inputting details on to the corporate on-line Financial Information System (SAP);
  • Analysing current year’s expenditure to date, using SAP, to carry out a reasonableness check on outturn forecasts and the forward year’s estimates, following up identified problems with client or financial staff and advising them on appropriate action;
  • Providing the service with monthly financial reports on the financial position, ultimately to be included in monthly and quarterly budget reports to the Cabinet and the Senior Leadership Team;
  • Providing the service with regular progress reports on jointly funded projects and monitoring the collection of grants from the external agencies; 
  • Providing guidance to clients on the closing timetable and required data, formats etc;
  • Validating and inputting all closing entries on SAP, after agreeing actions on complex/contentious issues with senior finance staff;
  • Completing a range of questionnaires and other financial returns, including: Government Revenue and Capital Outturn returns; CIPFA statistical returns; and external audit queries; apportionments according the CIPFA SERCOP;

Applicant Requirements:

  • Qualifications: GCSEs A-C or equivalent including at least English and Maths.

    Educated to A Level standard or equivalent experience

  • Experience: 2+ years working within a similar role. 
  • Compliance: Current Standard DBS check. 
  • Travel: Clean UK driving license with the ability to commute to and from work independently.
  • Hours: 37 hours p/w.
