Occupational Health and Wellbeing Advisor

Seven Social Care are looking for a Occupational Health and Wellbeing Advisor to work for Gloucestershire County Council based in Cheltenham.This position is full time (37 hours per week) and is paying £28.29 per hour. 

The Role:

As a member of the occupational health team you will participate in the development and provision of an Occupational Health Service to the employees of Gloucestershire County Council (GCC) and to external clients.  To do this you will be required to contribute to the health and well being of all employees.  You will use your professional clinical skills and expertise to provide advice on employee fitness to work, health surveillance, health screening and wellbeing interventions, maintaining confidentially at all times.   You will promote the health of the employees and safeguard their health from risks arising from their work and working environment.  

You will be actively involved in the maintenance of quality standards with the aim to achieve SEQOHS accreditation.  The postholder will be familiar with national/local guidance on any matters related to occupational health and help develop organisational policies, protocols and procedures in compliance with such guidance. You will contribute positively to the overall customer experience, and initiate, promote and support innovation in the OHS.  

Main Duties:

Fitness for Work

–    Effectively conduct fitness for work health assessments with new starters, providing a response to their line manager with regards to their work health and any potential adjustments and/or health surveillance required, in accordance with their role obtaining specialist reports in line with GDPR principles as required.

–    Undertake Driver’s Medicals to DVLA standards and in line with Occupational Health policy. To make decisions regarding fitness to drive in liaison with the OH Physician when required.

–    Undertake health screening of fire-fighters and advise on fitness for work.

–    Conduct and manage health surveillance programmes for appropriate employees depending on their job role including audiometry, spirometry and HAVs assessments.

Management Advice/Referrals

–    Contribute to an effective sickness absence case management service for managers within the County Council and other customer organisations.  

–    To provide specialist advice to employees and their line managers during periods of ill health and / or sickness absence.  

–    Writing professional reports summarising recommendations in accordance with professional best practice and relevant statutes and regulations with the aim to guide and support managers and employees in the management of their health and wellbeing.

–    Assess and advice on potential work related adjustments, temporary and longer term health and work related needs and liaising with the Senior OH and Wellbeing Advisor and OH Physician when required.

–    Appropriately triage cases via the manager referral system, and be able to give timely support to managers via the Occupational Health helpline. 

–    Utilise effective communication skills to support employees and managers. 

–    Triage referrals to counselling services, GP or OH physician, and to advise on external sources for wellbeing support. 

–    Use expertise to identify actual and potential hazards including manual handling, ergonomics, infection control and general working practices. 

–    Apply and adhere to relevant Standard Operating Procedures within the Occupational Health service. 

Record Keeping

–    Maintain and update confidential Occupational Health records in line with GDPR Principles and GCC Information Management and Security Policy.

–    Identify potential risk including safeguarding issues or potential risks to employees and/or the public and discharge duty of care accordingly and in line with principles of GDPR.

Health Promotion

–    Organise, prepare, and undertake health promotion activities, including lifestyle and wellbeing screening in line with organisational initiatives.  

–    Tailor and deliver individual health promotion to employees within general delivery of Occupational Health services and advice.

–    Work in liaison with the Senior Wellbeing Advisor as required and participate in the Council’s wellbeing forums and associated workstreams.

Health Surveillance

–    Organise, prepare and undertake systematic health assessments of employees exposed to health hazards at work, in line with employer risk assessment, relevant statutory legislation and HSE guidance.

–    Be competent in interpretation of health surveillance results and give appropriate advice accordingly.

–    Liaise with the SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) Unit when required.

Clinical Governance and SEQOHS

–    Actively participate in Clinical Governance and audit.

–    To contribute to service improvements via evidence based practice.

Health and Safety

–    To provide advice and recommendations in line with current legislative requirements.

–    Uphold and adhere to the principles of the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974).

CPD/NMC Revalidation

–    Actively engage in ongoing professional development and comply with registration requirements of the NMC.

–    Contribute to Clinical Supervision within the team.

Relationships

–    Maintain good working relationships within the organisation and key stakeholders, including external partners and customers with service level agreements. 

–    Participate in relevant meetings to promote collaborative working and support contractual delivery of services.

–    Support all colleagues within the OH Team including Administrators, Wellbeing Advisors, Case Managers and OH Technician.

Critical incident Support

–    Liaise with customers and the Senior Wellbeing Advisor when required to support customers and employees in the event of critical incidents in the workplace.

–    Have an awareness of the Councils critical incident response strategies and protocols.

Equipment calibration and maintenance

–    Monitoring stock control and to maintenance and calibration of medical equipment.

Other duties

–    To undertake other duties within the scope of the post and competence of the practitioner as determined by the Senior Occupational Health and Wellbeing Advisor.

Applicant Requirements:

  • Experience: Experience of supervising staff.
  • Experience in administration and using administrative management systems.
  • Good IT skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Customer focus and experience delivering excellent customer service.
  • Experience working in a busy environment.
  • Experience of working within a production or refurbishment environment
  • Travel: Clean UK driving license with the ability to commute to and from work independently.
  • Hours: 37 hours p/w.
